Overnight Ramp Closures and Lane Reductions Along Southland Corridor in July

CHICAGO, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is reissuing a warning to "Avoid the Kingery" this summer as lanes will be reduced, and on certain dates, the south suburban expressway will be completely closed for up to eight hours. These traffic slowdowns and stops are necessary as reconstruction work continues on the Kingery (also known as "I- 80/94"). The warning applies only to overnight and early morning hours; daytime and rush hour traffic will not be affected.

As work progresses throughout the Kingery corridor, IDOT announces the following schedule of ramp closures and lane reductions (weather permitting):

Saturday night, July 16th into Sunday morning, July 17th
AND
Saturday night, July 23rd into Sunday morning, July 24th

-- 10:00 PM to 7:30 AM - The ramp from eastbound 159th Street
(U.S. Route 6) to northbound I-94 will be closed.
-- 10:30 PM to 7:30 AM - Southbound I-94 will be down to one lane at 159th
Street (U.S. Route 6).
-- 11:00 PM to 9:30 AM - All lanes will close on eastbound and westbound
I-80/294 at Illinois Route 394. (One lane will open in each direction
at 7:00 AM).
-- Eastbound I-80/294 traffic will detour to the southbound Illinois
Route 394 exit ramp and then take the Glenwood-Dyer Road exit to
loop around to northbound Illinois Route 394, which will lead back
to the eastbound I-80/94 exit ramp. (Glenwood-Dyer Road will close
to local traffic over Illinois Route 394 at 10:30 PM).
-- Westbound I-80/294 traffic will take the exit ramp to westbound
I-94, exit at westbound 159th Street (U.S. Route 6) and immediately
take the entrance ramp to eastbound I-94, which will lead back to
the westbound I-80/294 entrance ramp. (Local traffic is advised to
avoid 159th Street (U.S. Route 6) during this time).

Sunday night, July 17th into Monday morning, July 18th
AND
Monday night, July 25th into Tuesday morning, July 26th

-- 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM - The ramp from eastbound 159th Street
(U.S. Route 6) to northbound I-94 will be closed. Southbound I-94 will
be down to one lane at 159th Street (U.S. Route 6).
-- 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM - All lanes will close on eastbound I-80/294 at
Illinois Route 394.
-- Eastbound I-80/294 traffic will use the same detour to Glenwood-Dyer
Road, which will close to local traffic over Illinois Route 394 at
10:30 PM.
-- 12:01 AM to 5:00 AM - All lanes will close on westbound I-80/294 at
Illinois Route 394.
-- Westbound I-80/294 traffic will use the same detour to westbound
159th Street (U.S. Route 6).

Weekend of Saturday, July 30th and Sunday, July 31st

-- Hours to-be-determined - All lanes will close on westbound I-80/294 at
Illinois Route 394.
-- Westbound I-80/294 traffic will use the same detour to westbound
159th Street (U.S. Route 6).

This work is part of the $430 million Kingery Expressway reconstruction project. Work began in 2003 and will continue through 2006. The completed project will include additional traffic lanes and reconfigured interchanges at Torrence Ave. and at the Bishop Ford Expressway/ Illinois Route 394 junction.
