San Angelo Hosts Exclusive Showing of Collection Spanning Three Centuries of American Art

SAN ANGELO, Texas, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Featuring 150 masterpieces spanning 250 years of American art history, the Visions of America exhibit will make its exclusive Texas debut at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts on July 3, 2005. This special exhibition features works by legendary artists Winslow Homer, Georgia O'Keeffe, Norman Rockwell, and many others. The Visions of America exhibit features masterpieces from the permanent collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut, one of the oldest museums of American art in the country.

"San Angelo is excited to host Texas' only exhibition of this important collection of American Art," said Howard Taylor, Director of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. "We welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds from across the state to join us in San Angelo to experience this world-renowned collection."

The Visions of America collection is the most comprehensive traveling exhibition of American art in the nation. The collection features pieces by noted American artists, including John Singleton Copley, Frederic Church, Thomas Cole, Georgia O'Keeffe, Thomas Hart Benton and Sol LeWitt. The collection is especially rich in American Impressionism, with representation from artists such as Mary Cassatt, William Merritt Chase, Theodore Robinson, Childe Hassam, John Henry Twatchman, Willard Metcalf and Maurice Prendergast and many others.

The paintings are exhibited chronologically, tracing the changes in American art over the centuries. Beginning with its origins in the Colonial period and early Republic, the story of American art continues with the development of landscape painting, images of women and their shifting roles in society, and the impact of European styles, notably Impressionism. The exhibition also vividly illustrates the divergent paths American artists traveled in the 20th century, from Realism to Modernism to Abstract Expressionism.

For this exhibit, the museum will be open during the following hours: Sunday: 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Monday - Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Admission fees range from $3 to $6.

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts

The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts is one of the nation's most dynamic small art museums. It recently received the nation's highest award for museums, the Museum Service Award, in a ceremony at the White House presided over by First Lady Laura Bush. The museum's exciting new building opened in 1999 and has received acclaim in publications throughout the world. The museum has a distinguished collection of contemporary American ceramics as well as paintings, glass and other art. A unique feature of the museum is that all collection storage, office and preparatory areas are accessible and the staff is on hand to explain museum activities to visitors. The museum features up to a dozen changing exhibits a year from all cultures and time periods. Each year from mid-April through June there is a ceramic exhibition. In even numbered years this exhibit is a National Ceramic Competition that has been called the "premier clay show in America" by a leading art critic.
