WIGAN, England, May 31/PRNewswire/ -- The weathermen are predicting a scorcher - with temperatures soaring to 101 degrees.

And a long hot summer could also spell the re-birth of our coastline and a much-needed day in the sun for Britain's tourism industry.

Because later this week (Friday June 3rd) environmental charity ENCAMS releases the results of this year's Blue Flags for clean beaches. And the forecast is set fair for another bumper crop of award-winners.

"Since 1987 when our coastline was a dilapidated joke, the Blue Flag Awards have given those who look after our beaches something to aspire to," said Alan Woods, Chief Executive of ENCAMS. "They have risen to that challenge magnificently and last year a record 122 beaches won the Award. Now with a baking hot summer just around the corner, we wait to see how many have hit the spot this time."

The Blue Flag is the world's most popular beach accolade. It asks resorts to achieve the cleanest seawater (as set-down in European Law) and pass the toughest tests on the state of their sand and the facilities they offer. According to a study carried out by ENCAMS last summer, the one thing visitors want most from a beach, is an assurance that they're clean and safe.

So which beaches will shine this summer? Find out on Thursday, when full releases detailing all award winners will arrive on news desks (embargoed until 0001hrs, Friday June 3rd). Note we have ISDN facilities for radio interviews and spokespeople in our regions and nations.
