She’s At Sea

Boat handling course for women offered at Cheeca Lodge by experts from Bay & Reef Company

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys – October 2006 – For the fifth consecutive year, Captain Elizabeth Jolin from Bay & Reef Company will conduct a series of two-day seminars designed to teach women how to handle a powerboat safely, intelligently and independently. The She’s at Sea seminars, offered at Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada, Florida Keys, provide basic boat handling skills in a safe, non-threatening atmosphere enabling participants to reach their personal goals in terms of technical skill, passenger safety and, first and foremost, the joy of being on the water at the helm of a boat and in charge of the vessel.

Previous courses have been a success and Captain Jolin has added additional dates this year to accommodate the growing interest among women to captain their own ship. “There are very few programs offering this type of hands-on education exclusively for women,” said Jolin. “Women have the ability to purchase their own boats and they want the confidence and the technical skills to operate them safely and in accordance with the maritime laws. Women are excellent students and we are proud to introduce them to the thrill of safe boating here in South Florida, as well as those who take the course here and then return to their hometowns all across the country.”

The weekend programs, sponsored by Cheeca Lodge and Caribee Marine offer a hands-on curriculum combining classroom study with on-the-water training. More than 75 percent of the course time will be spent behind the wheel learning boat handling skills, basic engine operation, anchoring techniques and the “rules of the road”. At the conclusion of the two-day program, women will have the fundamental knowledge and the confidence to operate personal or rental powerboats with ease.

The basic two-day She’s at Sea courses will be offered this year on the weekends of November 4-5 and December 2-3. The cost for the seminar is $375.00 per person, which includes lunch each day and all course materials. Participants in the program can also take advantage of special She’s at Sea rates for accommodations at Cheeca Lodge. The resort is offering 10 percent off room rates, which currently start at $315 a night. Rates are subject to change without notice and the 10 percent discount is only available on the nights of this program.
