Diners Club International Names South Africa’s Catharina in Top 100

CONSTANTIA, SOUTH AFRICA (12/11/06) – Catharina’s Restaurant, Steenberg Hotel & Winery in Constantia, South Africa, and a perennial favorite among cuisine lovers everywhere, has been named one of the Top 100 restaurants in South Africa in WINE magazine’s Dine 2007, Diners Club International’s annual guide to eating out.

Justine Drake, editor of Dine 2007, explained: “When choosing our restaurants, we look for fresh ingredients, inspired, passionate cooking, and uncomplicated food that allows the ingredients to shine. Also, authenticity is important, particularly when it comes to ethnic cuisine and great service – from the welcome and overall friendliness to the wine and food delivery. Wine lists, as well as whether the wine complements the food, comfortable, clean surroundings and the overall value for money are taken into consideration.”

Gaby Gramm, General Manager of the Steenberg, said: “We are really delighted that Garth has been recognized for his contribution to contemporary South African cuisine. In addition, his imaginative menus are carefully thought out so that they complement the Steenberg wines, also known for their excellence. He and his entire team are to be congratulated for this accolade.”

The five-star Steenberg Hotel dates back to 1682 and its buildings are a National Monument. Located on one of the Cape’s oldest wine farm which still produces award-winning wines, it has been totally restored with 30 guest rooms within the original buildings: the Manor House, Jonkershuis (young man’s house) and the Barn. The original wine cellar is now Catharina’s restaurant where décor incorporates all the historical architectural features of the old winery. A championship golf course follows the natural contours of the original farm.

Every spacious, air-conditioned guest room is fitted with luxurious furnishings, amenities, and antiques and overlooks the vineyards, the golf course, or the beautiful gardens. The Steenberg also has a Spa, two swimming pools, a gym, steam room and an on-site hairdresser.

The hotel offers a computer with complimentary internet access and wi-fi at the Pool Bar and Restaurant. A complimentary shuttle to and from Cape Town runs daily or the hotel will arrange one-way helicopter transfers. All guests are offered a complimentary wine tasting, cellar tour and will be transported to local restaurants and shopping areas on request. Complimentary port and sherry are found in all guest lounges and the hotel will assist with tee-off times at the Steenberg Golf Course and other near-by courses.
