Summer at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
NEW YORK, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Park Service (NPS) has announced that it will extend the operating hours for Liberty and Ellis Islands to provide more opportunities for summer visitors. Beginning on Monday, June 20 the park will be open an additional hour every day. Ferries will make their first departure at 8:30 a.m. from Battery Park, New York and Liberty State Park, New Jersey, with final boats returning at 6:30 pm. This extended schedule will run through Labor Day.
The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are National Park Service destinations available on the same tour and offer a wide variety of experiences. Ranger-led tours, breathtaking views of the Statue and the New York skyline, an engaging audio tour and multiple educational opportunities abound at both sites.
At Liberty Island, visitors can take part in a ranger-guided tour of the island, tours that are offered on a regular basis and require no advance reservation. Tours of the interior of the monument that let visitors discover how the Statue of Liberty was designed and celebrated throughout history, are also available. Visitors who wish to tour the interior of the monument need to obtain a free pass before arriving on the island. Advance passes for these programs are available by calling 866-STATUE4 or online at http://www.statuereservations.com/ . A limited number of these passes are also available daily at the ferry ticket offices at Battery Park, New York and Liberty State Park, New Jersey. Since the number of passes to tour the interior of the monument is limited each day, visitors are encouraged to make a reservation in advance.
At Ellis Island, the Immigration Museum is designed to be self-guiding; ranger-guided tours are also available. Other activities at Ellis Island include two theaters with films that chronicle the Ellis Island experience, a living history theater showing an immigrant-themed play, the American Immigrant Wall of Honor, and the American Family Immigration History Center. Also this summer a new exhibit, "Ellis Island Portraits," based on the work of famed photographer Augustus F. Sherman, will be on view through Labor Day.
A new ferryboat fare schedule that includes a $1.50 increase for adults and seniors, and 50 cents for children and school groups will be implemented on June 20. Even with this small fare increase, the cost for visitors to experience these two harbor icons remains far less than many other New York City attractions.
The new fares are:
Adults -- $11.50, Seniors -- $9.50, Children ages 4-12 -- $4.50.
The National Park Service granted this fare increase for the Circle Line-Statue of Liberty Ferry, Inc., after it evaluated increases in fuel and operating costs since fares were last changed in 2002. The NPS also evaluated other attractions in New York City and determined that ticket prices for water-based excursions and other major tourist sites have increased approximately 15% over the past three years.
