Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort Offers Free Golf for 2006

HILLMAN, Mich., March 28 /PRNewswire/ — Thunder Bay Golf and RV Resort announced its plan offering free golf to resort guests for the entire 2006 season. Foursomes staying in any of the Resort’s 18 large, 700 square foot suites pay just $59 daily per person for their lodging, breakfast and golf cart for 18 holes. Their golf at Thunder Bay is then free and unlimited. A two day minimum applies and some weekends will be $69 daily per person.

According to Resort Manager Melanie Libby, “The program is our response to an increasingly competitive market. Beginning with 9-11, golf destination travel has declined significantly — fueled also by overbuilding of courses, Michigan’s poor economy, decreases in state tourism promotion, increased fuel prices and announcements at Delphi, GM and Ford.”

“We noticed several major resorts offering unlimited golf, cart, lodging and breakfast for $109 per day, about what they used to charge for one round of golf,” commented Golf Pro John Kuzewski. “We commented, they are just about giving their golf away. So we decided to really give our golf away!”

Ask why Thunder Bay has undercut others by $40 to $50 per day? Resort owner Jack Matthias said, “Some resorts have multiple courses on site. We felt we need to offer tremendous values. We have negotiated special rates with nearby courses, so our guests can play multiple courses and we will still be competitive. We have also added new sets of tees so our course can be played as a Par 3 for additional variety.”

Can the Resort make any money at $59/$69 rates? “No, but it is marginally better than having those rooms half empty. We can maintain full employment levels for our staff, and it is great for golfers,” commented Matthias.

Are there any limitations? “The package is available all season, midweek and weekends, and the suites feature living rooms, kitchens, decks overlooking the golf course and some include whirlpool tubs. With our 18 suites, we are limited to a maximum 72 golfers at one time with this package, so book early,” said Matthias. “Villas and chalets are somewhat higher.”

“We offer our signature event, the Elk Viewing Carriage Ride Gourmet Dinners and Wine Tasting all summer and fall,” according to Libby. “The new RV Park is getting great reviews, with full service, pull through sites right on the golf course.”
