TIA Summer Forecast Predicts Record Travel Season
WASHINGTON, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- During TIA's highly anticipated Summer Travel Forecast at the National Press Club, Dr. Suzanne Cook, TIA's senior vice president, Research, predicted that Americans will be traveling in record numbers this summer. More than 328 million leisure trips are forecasted, up 2.3 percent over last summer. "It's going to be a record breaking summer season," Cook said, "continuing the travel recovery momentum that finally began last year." Nearly every sector of the industry will be up, especially air travel with an expected 4 percent increase over last summer.
While travel prices are up in the first three months of 2005, this will not discourage Americans from taking trips, but they will be looking for deals and ways to economize in order to save money without giving up their summer vacations. The need to economize is evident by the amount that travelers are budgeting for their vacation. Travelers plan on spending an average of $1,019 on their longest leisure trip this summer, a decrease of 7 percent from summer 2004 ($1,101).
TIA also released a special Travel Poll examining the effect of rising travel prices on summer plans. "Higher travel prices will keep some Americans at home or force them to reduce their travel this summer," remarked Cook. "But most travelers, as they have done in the past, are prepared to make the best of it and to once again modify their behavior."
TIA is the national, non-profit organization representing all components of the $600 billion travel industry. TIA's mission is to represent the whole of the U.S. travel industry to promote and facilitate increased travel to and within the United States.
