Travel Michigan: Michigan Fall Color Update

Fall Color Show Progresses In Northwest U.P.

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ — Today (September 21) may be the last official day of summer, but peak fall color is only 1-2 weeks away in Michigan’s Northwestern Upper Peninsula, according to AAA’s weekly fall color report.

AAA’s survey of state parks and regional visitor’s bureaus shows only 15- 25 percent color development in most areas of the U.P. However, along the western spine of the Keweenaw Peninsula, colors have reached 40 percent development and are reported as “fair.”

The best viewing can be found in the vicinity of F.J. McClain State Park (Calumet), Porcupine Mountain State Park (Ontonagon) and inland at Fort Wilkins State Park (Copper Harbor).

Just west of Marquette, at Van Riper State Park in Ishpeming, good color is reported in 40 percent of the trees, with peak color anticipated within 1-2 weeks. Across the rest of the U.P., color is just beginning to appear.

Early color spots in the Lower Peninsula include Gaylord, Cadillac, Manistee and Mackinaw City, where red, orange and yellow hues are reported, with color development at 10 percent.
