35 Million Passengers Expected to Travel Over Winter Holidays
Airlines Recommend Travelers Take Logical Steps to Expedite Check In
WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Air Transport Association (ATA) expects 35 million passengers to travel globally on U.S. airlines over the 16- day winter holiday period (Dec. 18-Jan. 2), unchanged from a year ago. ATA anticipates growth in international air travel, offsetting a modest year-over- year decline in domestic passengers during this period.
"Because millions of infrequent travelers will be flying over a 16-day period, many carrying gifts, passengers should remember to give themselves plenty of time to get to the airport and check in," said ATA President and CEO James C. May. "Planning, patience, cooperation and holiday spirit will go a long way in helping make traveling a pleasant experience."
Following are some important tips in helping travelers this holiday season:
* Do not wrap gifts prior to arriving to the airport, because they may
need to be physically inspected at the security checkpoint
* Arrive at the airport one to two hours (depending on destination) prior
to departure for domestic flights, and at least two hours for
international flights. It is important to check with your carrier in
advance for specific recommendations.
* Many airline Web sites offer check in 24 hours or less prior to
departure. Kiosks also offer convenient automated check in, which can
greatly expedite the process
* Travel with a government-issued photo identification card and have it
ready for security officials to examine
* Federal rules limit each customer's carry-on baggage to one standard-
size bag and one personal item (e.g., purse, briefcase, laptop computer)
* Place all metallic objects (e.g., loose change, keys, cell phone, watch,
camera) in a carry-on bag before arriving at security checkpoints
ATA suggests travelers also visit other helpful Web sites prior to traveling, including:
