Competitive Eating's Finest Meet in Atlantic City for Tropicana World Meatball Eating Championship
World's Greatest Eaters Vie for Prestigious Title on Saturday, December 3 at Carmine's in The Quarter at Tropicana
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., Nov. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- All eyes will be on Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, NJ, on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, when the nation's finest gurgitators clash at the second annual Tropicana World Meatball Eating Championship. The contest will be held in The Quarter, just outside of Carmine's Restaurant at 1:00 pm. There will be $5,000 in prize money on the line, broken down as follows: $2,500 for first place; $1,000 for second; $750 for third; $500 for fourth; and $250 for fifth.
Headlining the field will be Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas of Alexandria, VA, the No. 1 competitive eater in America. Last year, Thomas won the first- ever Tropicana World Meatball Eating Championship by consuming six pounds of Carmine's meatballs in 12 minutes. For her efforts, Thomas earned a new world record and the $2,500 top prize.
Also expected to compete are eating superstars Tim "Eater X" Janus, Ed "Cookie" Jarvis and Crazy Legs Conti of New York; "Humble" Bob Shoudt and Brian Subich of Pennsylvania; Loren "Bubba" Yarbrough of Georgia; Adam Lefler of New Jersey; and more.
"The Tropicana is excited to host this unique event," said Pam Popielarski, President and General Manager, Tropicana Casino and Resort. "It looks like these eaters will devour more Carmine's meatballs in 12 minutes than our most devoted customers will eat in an entire month - and that's saying something."
Said George Shea, Chairman of the International Federation of Competitive Eating: "With Atlantic City having hosted so many great heavyweight title fights, it's only appropriate that an epic battle of this magnitude be waged on these hallowed grounds."
The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), the governing body of all stomach-centric sports, conducts more than 80 events annually, including the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island, NY, Krystal Square Off World Hamburger Eating Championship, GoldenPalace.com World Grilled Cheese Eating Championship and Alka-Seltzer US Open of Competitive Eating.
The Quarter at Tropicana, Atlantic City's premier destination for dining, entertainment, shopping and spa options, also boasts the Havana Tower with 505 new guest rooms, 45,000 square feet of meeting space, and 2,400 new parking spaces. Combined with the existing property, Tropicana is the largest hotel in the state of New Jersey.
Tropicana Casino and Resort encompasses 14 acres and has ocean beach frontage of 220 yards along the famed Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Tropicana is operated by Aztar Corporation (NYSE:AZR) , a publicly traded company that also operates Tropicana Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Ramada Express Hotel and Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, Casino Aztar in Caruthersville, Missouri, and Casino Aztar in Evansville, Indiana.
