TSA Urges Hunters and Sportsmen to Pack With Care for Air Travel

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reminds individuals who have flight plans for their next hunting or fishing trip to pack carefully before coming to the airport. Traveling with outdoor gear, guns and most camping items is permitted, but outdoor enthusiasts should prepare in advance to avoid packing prohibited items in carry-on or checked baggage.

"It is particularly important that guns and other types of sporting equipment are packed correctly to avoid lengthy delays in the screening process," said Kenneth Kasprisin, North Central Area Director for TSA. "We want to especially remind hunters that ammunition must be properly packaged and placed in checked baggage. Weapons and ammunition cannot be taken through the passenger checkpoints. We also advise everyone to carefully check all pockets and the bottoms of carry-on bags for loose ammunition."

Following are some specific travel tips:

Firearms and Ammunition. Firearms, firearm parts, and ammunition may
only be transported in checked baggage, not in carry-on baggage.
Visit http://www.tsa.gov/ for specific packing requirements.

Air carriers have their own additional requirements for transporting
firearms and the amount of ammunition an individual may place in
checked baggage. Travelers should contact the air carrier regarding
its firearm and ammunition policies.

Bow and Arrows. Bows and arrows are prohibited from carry-on luggage,
but may be packed in checked luggage. Sharp objects packed in checked
luggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to
baggage handlers and security screeners.

Animal Repellants. Chemical repellants can be carried in checked
luggage if the volume is less than 4 ounces and has active ingredients
of less than 2 percent. Most bear repellants exceed these
limitations. We suggest buying such items at your destination and
leaving them behind upon return.

Hunting Knives and Tools. Hunting knives and certain tools are
prohibited from carry-on luggage. These items should be packed in
checked luggage. Sharp objects packed in checked luggage should be
sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and
screeners.

Fishing Rods/Poles. Fishing rods are permitted as carry-on and
checked baggage. However, please check with your air carrier to
confirm that rods meet size limitations for carry-on items.
Ultimately, it is the carrier's decision on whether rods and poles can
be transported as carry-on baggage.

Fishing Tackle. Fishing equipment should be placed in checked
baggage. Some tackle is sharp and dangerous. Expensive reels or
fragile tackle such as flies should be packed in your carry-on
baggage.

Spear Guns. Spear guns and spears are prohibited in carry-on luggage
and should be packed in checked luggage. Again, sharp objects packed
in checked luggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent
injury.
