United Raises a Glass to Toast its Best ‘Wine on the Wing’ Award from Global Traveler Magazine

United also Received the Award for Best White Wine

CHICAGO, June 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Customers flying in United Business(R) Class on its transcontinental p.s.(SM) and international flights are served the best “wine on the wing” according to Global Traveler’s annual in-flight wine survey. United also received the Best White Wine award for serving Selbach-Oster Riesling 2003 during March and April of this year.

“We are extremely pleased that Global Traveler has selected United for this prestigious award. As our customers come from around the world, it is our priority to offer them a great selection of wines as part of their premier travel experience,” said Jane Allen, senior vice president of Onboard Service for United. “Our wine consultant, Master Sommelier and Master of Wine, Doug Frost, helps us search for wines that are well-balanced, clean and rich and appeal to our customers’ discerning palates.”

According to Fran Gallagher, publisher and CEO of Global Traveler, the wine survey was conducted by 34 of the best wine judges in the world. Thirty- one airline contestants submitted two white wines, two red wines and a single champagne or sparkling wine offered in their international business-class wine service. The Airline Business Class Wine Competition is the only wine survey of its kind conducted in the United States.

United’s wine consultant, Doug Frost, is a Master Sommelier and Master of Wine — one of the only three people in the world to have achieved both distinctions. To help United find the best wine for its customers, Frost tastes 35 wines for every one that is chosen for wine selection on board. This year United will serve about 50,000 cases of still wine for international business class and 7,000 cases of international business class champagne.

United submitted Laboure Roi Pouilly Fuisse Maconnais 2002 and Selbach Oster Reisling Qualitatswein 2003 for the white wine category; Staton Hills Central Coast Syrah 2002 and Chateau Reysson Reserve du Chateau Haut Medoc 2001 for the red wine category; and Piper-Heidsieck Brut NV for the champagne or sparkling wine category.
