VAIL, Colo., Dec. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- This New Year's, make three resolutions that can be fulfilled in one winter vacation at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly mountain resorts.

Resolution #1: Have fun while shedding those unwanted holiday pounds.

Forget the treadmill and spin class, take a break from sweating indoors and become a lean, mean skiing machine. Skiing and snowboarding offer fun, exhilarating ways to shed pounds and stay in shape during the winter months. Alpine skiing and snowboarding can burn 250-700 calories per hour, while snowshoeing and Nordic skiing burn 450-900 calories per hour, according to the Snowsports Industries America. With nearly 17,000 total acres of groomed trails, bump runs, terrain parks, bowls and gladed terrain, Vail Resorts' five world-class mountain resorts offer the perfect playground for burning off thousands of calories.

January also is a great time to learn to ski or ride or fine-tune skills for less. Vail's Ski & Snowboard School, features the 3-D Series -- three consecutive days of beginner, intermediate or advanced group lessons for $189 (lessons only) or $354 (lesson and lift ticket combined), ages 15 and older. Offer is valid Jan. 6 - Feb. 15, 2006. Lessons are subject to availability. Rentals not included. Visit http://www.vail.com for information and reservations.

Learn-to-Ski is easy as 1-2-3 at Heavenly Mountain Resort. The instructors of the Heavenly Ski & Snowboard School will take never-ever skiers and snowboarders through the fundamentals of walking, sliding, turning, slowing down, stopping and linking turns in this three-day package. They guarantee it, or the next lesson is free. The package is $356 and includes three days of lessons, lift tickets and rental equipment. No reservations are required. Visit http://www.skiheavenly.com for information.

Those who crave a high-altitude adventure can try The Breckenridge Big Mountain Experience. Join one of the Breckenridge Ski & Ride School's elite instructors for an all-day clinic focused on the resort's steep double-black terrain. Experience the new Imperial Express SuperChair -- the highest chairlift in North America at 12,840 feet, accessing 400 acres of famed expert terrain. The clinic is $160 per adult, begins at 9 a.m., ends at 3:45 p.m., and includes lunch with the instructor. Limit four participants per instructor; reservations required. Call (888) LRN-2SKI or visit http://www.breckenridge.com for information and reservations.

Want to burn more calories? Try 13 runs and 24,000 vertical feet in one day at Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek's most advanced trails comprise the terrain that stretches from the world-renowned "Birds of Prey" men's downhill racecourse across Grouse Mountain to Larkspur Bowl. The most experienced skiers and riders can take The Talons Challenge with a private instructor or as part of a group lesson through the Beaver Creek Ski & Snowboard School. Call (970) 845-5300 or visit http://www.beavercreek.com for information and reservations.

Resolution #2: Spend more time with family.

Skiing and snowboarding are two forms of recreation that transcend generations. The entire family can ski or ride together, and Vail Resorts makes it even easier with attractive family vacation packages, programs and a wide array of activities on and off the slopes. There's no better time to start than January.

With the Vail Resorts and American Airlines Kids Fly, Stay and Ski Free package, for example, kids between the ages of 2 and 12 are eligible for a complimentary companion ticket on American Airlines when accompanied by a paying adult. Each child, with a paying adult, will receive a complimentary lift ticket for up to seven days and a free stay in the same hotel room or condominium, based on double occupancy, at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge or Keystone. The Kids Fly, Stay & Ski Free package is available from all cities served by American or American Eagle within the lower 48 states into the Vail/Eagle County Airport (EGE). Each of the five resorts also offers programs specifically designed for families. Keystone Resort, for example, offers a Mom, Dad & Me program through its Ski & Ride School.
