Wachovia Cycling Series to Present Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Bell to Bell Bike Ride

VALLEY FORGE, Pa., March 28 /PRNewswire/ — The Valley Forge Convention and Visitors Bureau announced today that the Wachovia Cycling Series will present the organization’s second annual Bell to Bell Bike Ride, produced by Threshold Sports. The 26-mile recreational cycling event links the Liberty Bell in Independence National Historical Park and the Women’s Justice Bell in Valley Forge National Historical Park. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the women’s charities of United Way of Southeastern PA.

The recreational ride will be held on May 29 as the kick-off for the Wachovia Cycling Series, a week of competitive cycling events in Lancaster, Trenton and Philadelphia.

“The addition of the Bell to Bell Bike Ride is great for the Wachovia Cycling Series. We are delighted to be able to expand the week-long series into Valley Forge and to give recreational cyclists the opportunity to kick off the best week of professional cycling in the country,” said Jerry Casale, chief operating officer of Threshold Sports which has produced the cycling series for the past 20 years.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Wachovia Cycling Series for the Bureau’s annual signature event and, more so, to become its ‘opening act,’” said Bureau president Paul Decker. “And we’re hoping the addition of our Bell to Bell Bike Ride will both contribute to and extend the public’s 20-year love affair with the Wachovia Cycling Series.”

The ride celebrates the 85th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave American women the right to vote for the first time in 1920. Its route, from Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell to the Justice Bell, in Valley Forge, is symbolic of women’s struggle to win voting rights. The Justice Bell is a replica of the Liberty Bell that was forged in 1915, and traveled the country with its clapper tied to its side, symbolically silent until the amendment was ratified.

Closing ceremonies at Washington Memorial Chapel will feature actresses portraying figures from women’s history and an opportunity for participants to ring the 2,000-pound Justice Bell. Disney Radio will provide fun and games for the Finish Line Family Festival.

The Wachovia Cycling Series includes races in Lancaster and Trenton and culminates in the USPRO Championship race and women’s Liberty Classic in Philadelphia, June 5. Now in its 21st year, the Wachovia USPRO Championship is the longest running and richest single-day cycling race in the U.S., with a purse of $142,000.

Visitors can book hotel packages, register for the ride, and see a full calendar of events and information about these and other cycling events in the region at http://www.belltobell.org/; or by calling toll-free, 1-866-VF-VISIT.
