Come Out to Play: Washington, DC Launches Inaugural ‘Theatre Month’
Washington, DC’s theatre scene is in full swing—and what else would you expect from the nation’s capital? New venues have opened, blockbuster productions are running and theatre seats are full. The city’s performing arts community is launching Come Out to Play, the first-ever Washington, DC Theatre Month.
A new winter promotion, Come Out to Play features discounted tickets to plays like Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing! at Arena Stage, Neil LaBute’s Fat Pig at Studio Theatre, Dame Edna at the National Theatre and other enticing options. Theatre-goers will also enjoy performances of Molière's legendary Don Juan by the Shakespeare Theatre Company and Shakespeare's Measure for Measure in the Folger Shakespeare Library’s intimate Elizabethan Theatre. More edgy productions are the rule at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, such as native Washington, DC playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s The Velvet Sky. Visit comeouttoplay.org for more information on performances, venues, dates and times.
Some of the city’s top restaurants are also getting into the act, offering discounted sumptuous meals before the show—such as a three-course selection of Nuevo Latino fare at Café Atlantico priced at $24.95 and a three-course selection of appetizers, entrées and desserts for $28 at Zola. And some of Washington, DC’s finest hotels have assembled packages at great value. At the Carlyle Suites, where rates start at just $139, guests enjoy complimentary high-speed internet as well as free breakfast and pre-theatre cocktails for two. The newly-renovated Beacon Hotel and Corporate Quarters will offer overnight accommodations, a three-course dinner for two at the hotel’s Beacon Bar & Grill and an evening nightcap for just $209 per night. And at the luxurious Jefferson Hotel, upgraded accommodations greet visitors, along with pre-theatre dinner for two, limo service to the theatre and post-play dessert and coffee, beginning at $329 per night.
Rounding out the experience, theatres will offer special pre- and post-performance talks and gatherings with actors, playwrights and directors.
The month-long production is organized by the Washington, DC Convention & Tourism Corporation and supported by Metro. Hotel packages are now available by visiting washington.org or by calling 1-800-422-8644.
