Washington, DC Heats Up with Summer Savings
WASHINGTON, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Summer is just around the corner, and Washington, DC is gearing up for an all-American season of festivals and special events. The Washington, DC Convention & Tourism Corporation's Summer FREEdom Savings promotion offers savings of 50% or more on accommodations, attractions and dining. Available Memorial Day through Labor Day, promotional hotel rates begin at $99 per night and include add-ons like Metro passes, breakfast and parking.
The city's newest professional sports team, the Washington Nationals, has inspired several hotels to offer baseball-themed Summer FREEdom Savings packages with amenities like souvenir programs and Cracker Jacks. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival (June 23-27 and June 30-July 4) turns its attention to the role of food in American society with Food Culture USA! Acclaimed chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Washington chefs Jose Andres and Michel Richard will share their techniques on demonstration stages. Alice Waters will recreate her Edible Schoolyard on the National Mall. Washington chefs will also take the celebration into the city with chef's dinners and menu selections in honor of the event.
It continues with Washington, DC Restaurant Week, August 1-7, when diners enjoy three-course, fixed-price lunch and dinner specials priced at $20.05 (lunch) and $30.05 (dinner).
Summer in Washington is a time for free events, including the Shakespeare Theatre Free-for-All -- a performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream in the open air (May 27-June 5); the National Symphony Orchestra's Memorial Day concert on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol (May 29); and the spectacular Independence Day celebration, A Capitol Fourth.
Washington's museums offer a variety of free exhibitions this summer. At the National Gallery of Art, catch Toulouse-Lautrec and Montmartre (through June 12) and Gilbert Stuart (through July 31). The National Museum of Natural History explores The Allure of Pearls and the National Museum of the American Indian showcases its new feature film, A Thousand Roads. Visitors enjoy free admission to these and other well-known attractions, including the fourteen museums of the Smithsonian Institution.
Free concerts take place at many points throughout the city, including the Library of Congress, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the National Zoo. Military bands perform several nights of the week at the U.S. Capitol, the U.S. Navy Memorial, and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial.
