Ontario International Airport Hosts “Holiday Heroes” Special Event for Disadvantaged Children

ONTARIO, CA — (MARKET WIRE) — 12/05/2005 —

Ontario International Airport (ONT) is hosting a holiday dinner for approximately 80 disadvantaged children from the Hero Club (Homework Enrichment Reading and Outreach). The community event will take place at the airport’s fire station where the children, ages five to 17, will be treated to a traditional holiday dinner with all the trimmings, hands-on tour of the fire station, guest appearances by local community mascots, and special visit from Santa Claus who will arrive by helicopter. Each child will also receive gift-wrapped toys, donated by airport employees and local businesses, and have keepsake photos taken with Santa Claus.

The Hero Club is an after-school program that provides tutoring services, enrichment activities, clothing and shoes referrals, school supplies, referrals to medical and dental care, on-site counseling services, and snacks for school-aged homeless children living within the west end of San Bernardino County.

Firefighters from ONT’s Airport Rescue & Firefighting (ARFF) division adopted the Hero Club children in 2004. The firefighters volunteer their time to host fun events for the children, help build and repair equipment at the Hero Club facility, and put on an annual holiday party. Due to the program’s enormous success, airport-wide employees, tenants, and local community businesses and organizations also participate.

The interaction between ONT’s firefighters, airport employees, local citizens and the children provides a positive role model for the children and builds goodwill in the community.
