NC Museum of Natural Sciences Tops 2005 NC Field Trip Attractions List

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ — Raleigh’s North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences again leads the list of most popular destinations for school field trips, according to the second annual survey conducted by Carolina Field Trips Magazine.

The state museum topped the list with 116,312 school students visiting on field trips for the 2004-05 school year.

“One of our main goals at the Museum is to instill a sense of wonder in all children, to help them understand and appreciate the natural world,” said Betsy Bennett, Executive Director of the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. “It’s exciting to know that so many school groups are taking advantage of the wonderful programs and exhibits we have.”

This year’s most popular field trip list was expanded to include the top 25 most popular attractions from last year’s original top 20. The list is compiled by Carolina Field Trips Magazine Publisher Sam Rogers. The magazine, the only educational field trip resource guide published in the Carolinas, is based in Charlotte and is in its ninth year. The magazine is distributed for the fall, spring and summer seasons.

Charlotte’s Discovery Place also repeated as the second most popular destination among school field trip planners, and the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro also held on to the third most popular ranking. A new entry to this year’s top five most popular destinations is the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville, jumping to fourth. Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill remained in the top five, moving from fourth to fifth.

Paramount’s Carowinds made its first appearance in the top 10 overall rankings, jumping from 13th to sixth place while Exploris based in Raleigh, Durham’s Museum of Life and Sciences, Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury and Raleigh’s NC Museum of History rounded out the top 10.
